Grand Canal Trip: Suzhou, Hangzhou & Shanghai

At the southern end of the Grand Canal (1,764 km in length connecting Hangzhou and Beijing) lies the "Land of fish and rice": The delta region of the Yangtze River. This area, once a great capital, is still the centre of silk, tea and papermaking in China. Suzhou, "Venice of the Orient", with its famed gardens and network of canals, exemplifies a classical Chinese town. Hangzhou, hailed by Marco Polo as "the most beautiful and brilliant city in the world," is equally as exemplary. This trip takes you to view authentic residential architecture and town layouts in ancient capitals, towns and villages of this area, while immersing yourself into the ancient Chinese culture of silk, tea and embroidery. Our destination is Shanghai, "Paris of the east", one of China's most dynamic and vibrant cities, a city buzzing with the economic development.

Time: All year round (best time from April to October)

Days 1-3: Suzhou

The elegant classical gardens, the old - fashioned living quarters adjoined and made accessible by delicate bridges "rainbowing" over placid yet genteelly pressing waters, all captured and bathed in rain drops from a days sprinkle. The competing beauties overwhelm. The glorious lakes, the lush green hill sides, this is Suzhou, the "Venice of the Orient", a city of eternal and poetic charm.

We'll visit the dreamy Classical Chinese Gardens here, a pedi-cab tour in the old town and participate in Chinese painting class. Suzhou is considered the center of silk and embroidery in China. We will visit the Silk Museum before heading to the Suzhou Embroidery Institute where we will have the opportunity to partake in the art of embroidery making.

From Suzhou an overnight Boat Cruise leads us along the Grand Canal to Hangzhou, a journey which cruises us pass one natty yet smart village home after another until the sun finally sets as it did hundred of years ago. Then we will stop at a Water-Town proud of its museum quality homes, stone bridges and small canals that transgress the town like a snake to hot desert sands. Leisure time is all about pampering ourselves in local custom: the local opera, the teahouse, promenading the bustling streets to sneak-in a local treat or two before dinner.

Days 4-5: Hangzhou

With a history dating back 2,100 years, Hangzhou is one of China's six historical capital cities. Marco Polo, the 13th Century Italian traveler, cited Hangzhou as "the most beautiful and brilliant city in the world". Hongzhou's Linyin Si, a stop on our itinerary, is one of the biggest temple complexes in China . It is renowned for its "laughing Buddha." It has daily services for the practitioners. The "when in Rome" tourist alike West Lake, is considered one of China's most magnificent lakes, and for the Chinese, a lake laden with literary and historic association. Hangzhou gives birth to the best green teas in China, and in early spring these teas have their best aromas and flavors. A highly artistic and amusing Tea Ceremony is enjoyed followed with a Trek up the Mountains, which are romantically spoiled in tea bushes.

Days 6-7: Shanghai

Baptized as "Paris of the East", Shanghai has witnessed the best and the worst of China 's modern history and is to this day the most fascinating business and commercial "Capital" of China . A walk on The Bund near the Huangpu River will show you Shanghai's best new millennium vogue pose: on the West bank stands the old "Wall-street" dotted with European-style bank buildings built in the beginning of the 20 th century by foreign invaders and on the East bank glows Pudong where the tallest and most avant-garde sky-scrapers electrify the skies. Also topping our lists of "Shanghai must does" is the treasure filled Shanghai museum, the French Concession's Backstreets, the old market Yu Gardens Bazaar , and let's not forget "shop till you drop" Nanjing Lu.
