Hutong (Ancient City Lane)
|
"Hutong" (a Mongolian word) literally means a small street or a lane between two courtyards, but the word represents more a community culture that the residences are living a peaceful traditional life. The thousands of hutongs scattering in Beijing were built in the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty (1271-1911). Today they are on the verge of extinction as one after another were demolished to give away to modern archetectures, and the traditional hutong-lifestyle is also gone to the dust. Nowadays people visit hutong with a nostalgia appreciation. The most interesting way tour is taking a man-powered pedicab in the Shichahai Lake area (right behind the Forbidden City). You can see Bell and Drum Towers and former residences of famous opera singer Meilangfang and literary giant Guomoluo .
